Tribute to Merle Haggard & Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting
It’s been over a year since we’ve produced a brand new Country’s Family Reunion series… Well, the wait is over. In May of this year, we produced TWO new series—and, frankly, I don’t know which one to mention first.
The first is a continuation of our somewhat limited Tribute series. Remember, we started with Bill Andersons 50th Anniversary show and later a tribute to the great Ray Price? Well, now we’ve honored the one and only… MERLE HAGGARD. That’s right. This is the singer songwriter that so many of today’s country artists point to as their inspiration. Many of today’s country artists sang Merle’s songs and told their stories of life on the road and in concert with Merle, including three of his sons, Marty, Noel and Ben. Others included in the show were: Mac Wiseman, Ronnie Reno, David Frizzell, Daryle Singletary, John Conlee, Teea Goans, Bobby Bare, Ray Benson, Dallas Wayne, Rhonda Vincent, Vince Gill, Paul Franklin, Mark Wills, Emily Gimble, T. Graham Brown, Mo Pitney, Jeannie Seely, Jim Lauderdale, The Isaacs, Moe Bandy, Tony Booth, and Gene Watson. Hosted by Bill Anderson.
Because I mentioned TWO new CFR series, didn’t I? I could just tell you what we’re calling it, but that would spoil the fun.
While Sunday morning was all spit and polish and Sunday night was a little less so, Wednesday night was loose and casual. Dads would come straight from work in work clothes, Mom’s would grab the kids is school clothes and everyone would go to the Wednesday night meeting. There might be some impromptu ‘specials’, a few testimonies and a sermon, but the general tone of the midweek service was more friendly and social than the Sunday services. Well, that’s what we’re going to do.
We had a Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting where we invited the country legends in our Reunion family to bring their instruments and sit with each other sharing hymns and songs. Bill Anderson hosted with artists The Whites, Gene Watson, The Isaacs, Con Hunley, Jimmy Fortune, Linda Davis with husband Lang Scott and daughter Rylee Scott, The Oak Ridge Boys, Rhonda Vincent, The Gatlins, T. Graham Brown, Doyle Dykes, John Conlee, Gordon Mote, Phil Johnson, Barbara Fairchild, John Berry, Ricky Skaggs, The Martin Family Circus, Teea Goans and surprise guest, veteran gospel singer Henry Slaughter.
